The number of participants continues to rise as over 150 taekwondists are expected to compete at the second edition of the 2017 Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation (CCSF) Prix Series, which holds on June 9 to 10 at the Old Parade Ground Abuja.
From the initial 112 made up of 72 kids and 40 adults that featured in the inaugural edition of the championship, the organizers have projected that more athletes are willing to be part of the tournament.
According to CCSF, four categories – kiddies, cadets, juniors and adult categories are to be jostled for by states, clubs and schools.
Also as part of efforts to ensure it is truly a grassroots development initiative, elite athletes who have represented Nigeria and other countries are not eligible to participate in the event. A total of N178, 000 prize monies will be given to winners in the adult categories. Medals and certificates will be given to all medallists across all the categories.
Head Coach of A.B.U Zaria, Alhaji Sani Lawal, who is a 2-time ex-National Champion, 3-time ex-Nigeria University Games Champion and an International Certified Coach from the Kyung Hee University South Korea, has lots of praise for the initiative.
“Programs like this gives me hope for the future of Nigeria Taekwondo. Imagine how powerful it will be to have athletes who do not even have black belts, using the same technology and equipment at major competitions like the Olympics and World Championship at the grassroots stage.”
He added: “This is why even though it was an FCT Abuja event, I made sure my athletes in ABU Zaria took advantage of it by bringing them to gain the experience. Surely, I will bring even more athlete to gate crash the next edition.”
Online registration for the kiddies and cadets’ categories of the event has begun while that for the juniors and adults would begin on April 20. The CCSF prix series is scheduled to hold at the last month of every quarter in the year.
